One Fine Day

Strange, unexpected weather. Unusual cloud patterns. Spectacular skies. The day started out chillly but began to heat up quickly. One of those days where everything can change in an instant. Unbearably hot and humid by the end of the day, but beautiful. Really beautiful.

Sunset Sweet

This was such a lovely sunset -- the last one we'll see from our house this year, since we're heading off for Florida tomorrow. The colors shift and fade so quickly, it reminds me that the calendar has moved swiftly this year, as well; the days and months do seem to get shorter and shorter with the passage of time. Seize the daylight!

Sutro Sunset

I'm almost never on the city side of the bridge anymore, but I just happened to be driving past the site of the old Sutro Baths the other night as the sun was setting over the Golden Gate. I've always adored this place, its history and mystery, and would have loved to have seen Sutro Baths in its heyday, before it burned down. But then again, the building would have blocked this view...

Blaze of Glory

The last sunset of the year was so spectacular, I keep going back to this picture to remind myself of the joy and inspiration I felt when the sight of it caught me by surprise. I was going out the front door to light the hurricane lamps before our guests arrived on New Year's Eve, and I was stopped in my tracks by the splendor of Nature's display. Five minutes later, and I would have missed it. It's a good lesson for 2008: it's always worth looking beyond your own four walls.

Sunset Serene

The hour before dinner is the craziest time of day at our house, no contest. Tummies rumble, the little ones are tired and cranky, and everyone anxiously awaits James’ arrival. Getting us all around the table at the same time is becoming a challenge, but it’s the unspoken rule; you eat dinner with your family unless you have a really creative excuse.

Last night I was in the kitchen battling with a partially frozen fowl that finally acquiesced, and I could tell by the lengthening shadows that the sun had dipped behind Mt. Tamalpais. I went to open the front windows and was greeted by the stunning sight of an evening sky strewn with color.

“Come look at the sunset!” I said, and they all came running. We went out on the front porch for a better look, and the cool air seemed to calm everyone on contact, even the antsy almost-two-year-old. The western horizon puts on a brilliant display almost every night at this time of year, and none of us ever tire of watching the show. No one ever wants to go back inside, either.
